Ditto. I think he could bring out the exasperation and pessimism that so much of my life warrants. And the transition to the good parts would be even funnier. “Oh, sorry honey, you’re why I keep going. I should have said that to him.”

Because the way to get rid of angry, desperate people is to kill them. A better way is to get rid of the desperation, which usually gives them something to lose, which gives them less desire to engage in actions that will lose them. That’s why the War on Terror ended in a withdrawal, and not a victory. Sure, education and economic improvement isn’t very fast, but some governments seem to be more than okay spending a couple decades doing something different.
No, this won’t get rid of all of the terrorists, but how many of the wealthy, educated, married extremists with families are actually willing to risk their lives for their beliefs?
Like most questions that devolve to, “What would the world be like if people stopped doing bad things and just <insert wish here>?” pretty great. (The wish in this case is help each other with raising children.) Now if only we could get people to stop doing bad things.
There are a handful of commercial sailing vessels for both cargo and cruises, although they are hard to find. Here is one I found that still seems to be in service. A fairly complete list of sailing vessels can be found here. Some that are listed as currently sailing actually aren’t, but it’s still a place to look. The Royal Clipper seems to do the occasional transatlantic cruise, so that could be relevant for the OP. I didn’t take price into consideration, they could be quite expensive.
You were added to a group chat that was described to you as a way to make sure everyone got home safe. If you didn’t want to be a part of it, you could have easily waited until everyone checked in, expressed your happiness that everyone was safe and removed yourself from the chat. If you didn’t want another group forming without you being able to keep tabs, that obviously wouldn’t work. So I have to wonder about your motivations when you don’t take the easy and obvious way out.
I started having trouble with one of my knees when I was a teenager, probably due to reckless behavior. Still have chronic joint pain, with most of them, but at least I don’t get the acute knee pain anymore. I can usually tell when my knee movement is going to cause problems and stop the action before it kicks in. But it’s been at least a year since i was pain free without medication.
I’d rather drink regular water than these drinks that taste like you refilled a glass that had previously been used for a drink that actually had flavor, but enjoy it if that works for you. It’s certainly healthier than regular sodas.
It really isn’t useful if you’re viewing images, obviously, but it has has some benefit in other realms. It’s a good idea for an international market, but it will take time for everyone to buy into it and get used to it.
If you unsub and suddenly get emails from a new address from the same organization, that is absolutely spam.
Me: “Bob, I don’t want to hear from your company anymore.”
Bob: “Okay, you won’t hear from me anymore.”
Jeff, Bob’s coworker: “Hey, we have some great stuff we’d like to tell you about!”
Me: “Fuck off, Jeff, and that goes for all of your and Bob’s coworkers, as well.”
In 1990, they started to sequence the human genome. About a decade later, the shotgun sequencing technique was advanced enough to be used on the human genome. A few years later, it was declared complete. In 2022, it was considered to be gapless, almost 2 decades later.
All of this, plus some other discoveries, led to CRISPR and the ability to edit genes in fully formed beings rather than just a few cells. After decades of research in a number of fields.
One of the things DNA does is make protein. (If you want to look at it a certain way, all it does is determine where and when to make protein.) Part of what makes protein do the thing it does is the shape it takes. (For instance, prions are misfolded proteins that cause other proteins to misfold, and then other weird things happen, like holes in your brain.)
So we have this massively complicated process that makes slightly less complicated things that behave in a variety of ways depending on their shape, which is dependent on the myriad ways they can fold, at the molecular level. And you wonder why they haven’t done a lot when we’re still to a large degree in the data-collecting and validation portion of this massive undertaking. As for what it can lead to, I expect it will be no less revolutionary than CRISPR is and will be, but that could still be decades away.
There are two rules you need to know in negotiations. First, never lay all your cards on the table.
Saying “religion is the problem” when the problem crops up in many different areas regardless of which religions are present in an area or if religion isn’t present at all makes it seem like you might be focusing on the wrong thing. Nationalism, religion, strong ideologies, groups with deep emotional bonds and a sense of insularity are all susceptible to the same things - charismatic leaders can easily direct their attention and they have a tendency towards directing their hostility towards groups that don’t fit into their group.
So, tribalism. And if one tool won’t work, or is removed completely from access, those who wish to use tribalism to mobilize a large group to help them achieve their goals will just use the next one that is available to them. The tools are rarely what are important to them, but the results. So I don’t see how focusing on one tool, even a particularly well-suited tool, will solve the problem.
First, religions and the existence of God are two different things, just like the existence of the earth and the earth being flat are two different things. Likewise, the existence of religions is no guarantor of God’s existence, nor is there many flaws proof of his non-existence. And unknowns are facts we haven’t discovered or proven yet, much like germ theory, or fanciful ideas which haven’t been debunked, such as the idea that an imbalance of humors was the cause of disease.
I get what you’re saying, but saying people who choose to believe something that can’t be proven and hasn’t been disproven need psychotherapy is like saying the same for color preferences. Sometimes there is no right answer and people should be able to choose.
I don’t tell non-straight people they can’t have their pride parade, I don’t tell people they shouldn’t kiss or hold hands in public, I don’t tell religious people they can’t have public displays, either. What I object to is if any of those groups insist I join them, or insist I don’t.
Every terrible thing done under religion has been done without religion. None of them have happened without people (except for killing the different). Maybe people are the problem and religion is just one of many tools that can be used to harm other people. Tribalism exists in many forms, religion in its many flavors being just one of them.
I’m not sure that more loose cannons is the solution to the number we have now. I suppose if he was on a tight leash they could always threaten people to smarten up or they won’t hold him back.
I like Lewis, but he might be a little too angry to be in charge of missiles.
I heard it was due to greater blood flow to areas that routinely don’t experience that level of flow, kind of like how you really notice the breeze on your face after you shave off your beard. Now, I don’t have any proof this is it, but a month or so of regular brisk walks should be enough for your cardiovascular system to adapt to the new requirements, causing the sensation to vastly reduce if not disappear completely.
I could buy this. Also, the fonts are very jarring and intrusive. I rarely want to view what’s behind the spoiler tag, just give me a line for bias and a line for credibility, no need to be bold and a smaller font if anything, and hide the rest behind the spoiler tag if I’m interested. I already know where MBFC’s bias is, and I can adjust that to get an idea that when they say left, I think center or maybe left-center.
All of that seems pretty reasonable to me, but not if your goal is advertising…
