Maybe the handiest place was a drive through our maybe it was just one of those ideas, but a fairly considerable number decided to go walk to the nearby drive through. I’ve used literal card decks and GTDish pen and paper systems when there was more demanding need on tracking things. They’re effective.

I’d get a new drive. Install a sane os and needed tools and use that. They should be cheap these days. Put the old one in a safe place in case you need something from it. When you find it years on and notice that there was nothing important there after all, recycle it. That’s a much safer approach.

Dust is meant to give you an instant overview of which directories are using disk space without requiring sort or head. Dust will print a maximum of one ‘Did not have permissions message’.

Dust will list a slightly-less-than-the-terminal-height number of the biggest subdirectories or files and will smartly recurse down the tree to find the larger ones. There is no need for a ‘-d’ flag or a ‘-h’ flag. The largest subdirectories will be colored.

It’s like a killer combination of du and sort oneliners that actually shows me what I want to know: What’s the big stuff in this dir.

Depends on the machine and… maybe other things. I used to think that, too, but on my current machines I can step backwards just fine.

It’s probably a much more intensive operation requiring processing a lot of the file from before and throwing away current buffers or something.

You can pick any. I guess the way is to just pick one based on it’s description or users or package availability or size and then learn to use it. And or try another one when you figure out if it has problems. Sick with the one you like the most. Or write your own.
