  • Yes, it is worth getting into video games. Mental quickness, friends, and less Alzheimers are some benefits.

People in this post are making excellent recommendations for quality commercial games.

I can recommend starting out in videogames, by getting into Free Software (Libre) games.

Libre Games cost nothing, have no spyware, and usually have positive, helpful, DIY focused communities.

Here is a post I made that lists a few of my favourite free games on desktop and mobile.

If any on this list are too difficult or hard to set up, just skip.

    Historical note

The Fool’s Errand game, from 1987, sold very well with women gamers. Over 50% IIRC.

It is a tricky puzzle game with Tarot Card theming and an excellent sense of humour.

Fool’s Errand is not Free Software though, and way out of print. It could probably be emulated on a device that you have, PC or phone.

  • We invited another friends’ family over to sit at a table in our driveway. Had dinner, chatted, handed out lollies to about 40 kids, gave them compliments on their costumes. The 10 who were without costume got the same lollies and “Happy Halloween”. I remember what it is to be a kid.

The parents chaperoning kids around are usually not in costume.

As for our decorations and costumes, we had fake spider and snake out, I dressed up family members in a sugar-skull shirt, and I wore a NIN Ghosts shirt.

Before heading out front, my dad-joke got a groan, when I said, “I am dressed as ghosts!”

  • Each area of the world is different.

Where I am, there are 3 or more groups that meet up every 2 weeks. They are informal meetups with a small fee of $5, for anyone to come down and join in playing boardgmes with others. At community centres in different suburbs.

You can pre-arrange to play with friends, or just meet and play with people on the day.

I’ve made many good friends, found great games, and taught many games to others through these groups.

To find them in your town, search for this:

    Boardgame association [your town name]

Casual boardgame night [your town name]

    Boardgame meetup [your town name]

If you can’t find any meetups using these strings, it may be an opportunity to set up a casual game group in your town.

    • Boardgames that are awesome and I’ll play at anytime: Bruges, Inis, Port Royal, Innovation, Targi, Jaipur, Grand Austria Hotel, Morels.
